Merrie Monarch Hula Competition 2004, where the kane, for their first time, won 1st in Hula `Auana with their surfing song about a surfing lesson in which the kane had all gone surfing together. Kumu hula Lanakila was so inspired that he wrote a song about the story. They also took 3rd place in Hula Kahiko

Merrie Monarch 2005 from `Aukai's camera. In this competition the Kane took 2nd place in hula kahiko, missing 1st place by 5 points, the first place winner was Halau Na Kamalei, our hula geneology and kumunui. It was also his 30th year celebration of HNK halau.

The wahine of Halau I Ka Wekiu entered the Merrie Monarch 2006 Hula Competition in Hilo, Hawaii. They astounded the crowd with their hula kahiko and `auana performances. Ka'ena Hopkins competed in the Miss Aloha Hula Solo Competition winning the Hawaiian Language Award and placing 4th out of 16 contestants. Order of pictures, Ka'ena Solo, Wahine Kahiko, and Wahine 'Auana. The kane did not enter in 2006.

In the unbelievable sweeping win of Merrie Monarch 2007, the kane won 1st place in all divisions and took 1st place in the overall halau division for the entire competition. These are the pictures of the halau making their hala skirts, leis, practices, and more.

The kane of Halau I Ka Wekiu won 1st place in all awards, winning a total of four awards in the kahiko, `auana, overall, and overall halau divisions. This was the first time our halau did so well and has swept the Merrie Monarch in the kane division. Congratulations to all the kane, this was an amazing victory for all of you.

This competition in Maui had entries from International halau. Our Hiwas (kupuna wahine) competed in the competition taking 1st place with their hula 'auana -Kaho'olawe. KUmZ also decided to enter a male soloist for the first time in the halau's history. And also taking 1st place performing a hula kahiko - Waipi'o Paka'alana and hula 'auana - 'Ahulili, `Aukai Reynolds also had the highest scores of the competition overall.

The women of Halau I Ka Wekiu compete at the 2009 Merrie Monarch hula competition. They performed He Inoa No Kamaka'eha for hula kahiko, and in hula 'auana they performed Ho'olohe I Ka Leo I Ka Poli.

On April 9th and 10th, the Kane performed Waialua Ka I Ka Lani Keha (composed by Kaipo Hale) for their hula kahiko, and Kou Ma'i Ho'eu'eu for their hula 'auana. The kahiko took 4th in the competition, and the 'auana took 3rd place. These are the professional pictures shot by our very own Mr. Bill Wheeler. Mahalo Mr. Wheeler....

The Kane of Halau I Ka Wekiu took a trip to Kaua'i on July 27, (although the Kane were told they were going to Maui, a suprise) for cultural enrichment and bonding. They performed ceremonial protocol, helped with Alae at the Salt Ponds at 'Ele'Ele, learned to pick Maile at Kalalau, and took a great boat trip around the Na Pali coast from Nohili (south side). Some kane and two very significant Kane kokua received their leihulu...

After winning the Merrie Monarch 2007 in overall festival winner. The kane are invited to go to Japan to perform in Ikaho at a hula exhibition. The kane also went to Omuta and Iwaki city on this trip as a previous arrangement was made, prior to winning. The kane enjoyed the many travels by train, plane, bus, and even taxi around the cities, meeting new people and seeing wonderful places. This was a crazy trip with thousands of Japanese fans wanting autographs, pictures and handshakes from the kane. Just a little bit of fame...and some great memories.

In October of 2007, the Wahine of Halau I Ka Wekiu took a trip to Moloka'i with only a few kokua, for a trip that can only be described from our kumu as 'just wonderful.' From picking kalo in the lo'i to beautiful scenes on the beach, the wahine explored the landscapes of their hearts and souls.

Halau I Ka Wekiu was invited to perform at the Orchid Festival in Fukuoka, Japan, which coincided with the halau's 10th year birthday. Kumu Veto and Kumu Lanakila decided to perfom a special concert in Fukuoka, to celebrate their 10th year anniversary of the halau.

The Kane were invited to perform at the Ka'u Festival, which was set up to help in the preservation of Punalu'u. We took a trip before the festival to the south side to see the lava entering the ocean, and then had a quick trip to Kilauea after the performance. These are the pictures from 'Aukai's camera...so a lot of behind the scenes stuff here, including the house we stayed in.

We took a trip to Osaka Japan to perform in their 4 hour concert..along for the ride were KUmZ V and L, and from the girls...Wehi, Keala, Robyn, and Whitney....from the guys,...'Aukai, TC, Sol, and Joseph. This was a quick trip in and out in about 4 days. These are the pics from `Aukai's camera, so many behind the scenes at places we ate, and things we saw and did.

On a Hawaiian Airlines historic commemoration of their new purchases of the Airbus France 330, we got to go on a chartered flight to Toulouse France. Where the kane performed two kahiko numbers, and two impromptu `auana numbers. It was 36 hours of travel roundtrip, and 24 hours of stay in Toulouse, but what a beautiful place to visit, and with such great people, food, and culture. A great historical event for Hawaiian airlines that we were lucky to be a part of.

Halau i ka Wekiu had the opportunity to travel with eight other halau to share their love for hula throughout Japan. There were nearly 100 people traveling together, including dancers, kumu, musicians, and organizers. The group started with a show in Kamakura, then moved on to Yokohama, Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. Although it seemed like an unimaginable feat to move such a huge group between cities, the venture was completely supported by Mr. Kubouchi, whose family started the Hello Kitty legacy. Everyone was inspired by his determination to share Hawaiian music and dance because he's been promoting Hawaiian culture for decades..."From the time before some of you were born", he emphasized!

Where is the Love? Fundraiser Concert

This fundraiser was a concert put on by the students of Halau I Ka Wekiu, directed by Kumu Veto Baker and Kumu Lanakila Casupang. This album is a behind the scenes display what goes into this show of hula, chant, dance, and even some numbers honoring our Polynesian cousins.
